This is the privacy policy for WikiRyvals, a fan-made project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation or Wikipedia.

WikiRyvals (“we”, “us”) is a competitive Wikipedia-racing game delivered as a Chrome extension plus a backend service. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices. It is written to be plain-English; if anything is unclear, email us (below).

The short version: We collect the minimum needed to run accounts and ranked matches - your email (to sign you in), your username, and your gameplay results. While a race is active we check the path you took through Wikipedia to keep matches fair. We do not track your general browsing, we do not use ads or third-party analytics, and we do not sell your data.

Information we collect

Account information

Email address - used only to send you a one-time login code and to identify your account. Login is passwordless (no password is stored).
Username and optional region/country - shown on leaderboards and to opponents.

Gameplay information

Your rating and rank (“Edit Points”/EP), match history, win/loss records, daily/weekly puzzle results, streaks, friends, and party membership.
For each race you play: start and target articles, your completion time, number of clicks, and the sequence of articles you navigated through.

Path data during an active race (anti-cheat)

While you are in an active race, the extension reports to our server the title of the Wikipedia article you are currently on and the links present on that page. We use this only to verify that each move was a legitimate link click (our anti-cheat) and to compute your route.
We do not collect the pages you visit when you are not in a race, and we do not read or transmit your browsing history.

Technical information

A session token that keeps you logged in (stored locally in your browser - see below), and basic request data (such as IP address) inherent to any web request, used for security and abuse prevention.

Data stored locally in your browser

The extension uses Chrome's local storage on your device to hold:

your session token (to stay signed in),
your light/dark theme preference, and
your current race state (so a race survives a page reload).

This data stays on your device and is cleared when you log out or remove the extension.

How we use your information

To create and operate your account and authenticate you.
To run solo races, ranked matchmaking (1v1 and duos), private lobbies, daily and weekly puzzles, leaderboards, friends, and rankings.
To keep matches fair (path validation / anti-cheat) and to detect abuse.
To maintain and improve the service.

We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it.

Other players: your username, region, rank/EP, and match results are visible to opponents and on leaderboards. Your email is never shown to other players.
Wikipedia: races take place on en.wikipedia.org. Your interactions with Wikipedia are also subject to the Wikimedia Foundation Privacy Policy.
Email delivery: we use an email/SMTP provider solely to deliver your login codes.
Legal: we may disclose information if required by law.

We do not use third-party analytics, advertising SDKs, or tracking pixels. The extension communicates only with our backend and with Wikipedia.

Data retention and deletion

We keep account and gameplay data for as long as your account exists. You can request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by emailing us at the address below; we will delete it (other than anything we must retain for legal or abuse-prevention reasons).

Security

Login is passwordless and session tokens are scoped to your device. In production, traffic is served over HTTPS/WSS. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Children

WikiRyvals is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy; we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice.
